When Rakesh Sharma entered the room of infinite darkness called “Space”, it was a proud moment for each and every Indian down below. When Voyager 1 of NASA clicked the famous “The Pale Blue Dot“, it was a mesmerizing moment for all of the citizens of humanity. Wonders leave their footprint over the minds of people and become inevitable for some extent. But due to the invasion of technology , they will be present till the day of judgement.
There are various space research organizations on our blue marble “Earth”, but the most advanced and successful is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States of America. Over Its Inception, this entity has conducted several space researches and is the only one organization to send humans to the surface of the moon. Some say success has no limit, however NASA’s reach is way beyond our solar system. The credibility of research and the contribution that this organization has given us, is unimaginable.
Every contribution by this entity has marked the history and has provided us fragile details about the solar system. From Neil Armstrong’s moon landing to the space telescope “Hubble“, the experiments are far beyond normal. But, there is one experiment which by far, the most important yet intriguing mission that NASA has ever conducted. That is, the Voyager mission and their Golden Vinyl Records.
The Golden Vinyl Record
August and September of the year 1977, two satellites were launched in the space, called as the “Voyagers”. These satellites had one and only purpose, which was to study the gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn Uranus, Neptune). They were equipped with various sensors to examine the undiscovered features of the giants. It has been over forty years since the launch of the Voyagers, and their distance from earth is over 13 Billion Miles. Live tracking of the Voyagers. Both of the voyagers are now entering the interstellar space as they are done with their mission. But, what are the golden vinyl Records?
The scientists of NASA believe that there is an existential life out there, somewhere. They believe that they are curious to know about us as well. On the behalf of the citizens of Earth, NASA wants to deliver the proof of our existence to the aliens out there. The scientists want them to know that we exist and we are sending you the details of our existence. By the time the records reach out to some alien/existential life out there, planet Earth and humanity will be long gone! The day of judgement shall be upon us soon, but what about the proof that we had ever lived? NASA has taken care of it and has processed the golden records with the beauty of our life.
Where are the Golden Records ?
The golden records are attached to the outer surface of both of the Voyagers. Attaching the discs to both of the Voyagers, increase the probability of getting more reach in the forever darkness.
The Golden records are attached to the voyager on its circular column. The discs are designed in a very peculiar way so that the other generation can easily understand it. We believe, if they find the record, then they will be having the ability to decode it. Each record is enclosed in an protective Aluminum jacket, with a needle and a Cartridge. Simplicity is also required.
What does the Golden Vinyl Record contain?
You might be wondering, after all what message do the discs actually contain? The discs has various forms of messages of humanity in the following format-
Images on the Golden Vinyl Record
NASA has studied carefully and it took them over an year to process the record and decide its content. The images inside the discs are fascinating, altogether they are enough to explain the birth and the death of our planet Earth. From the birth of a child; mother breastfeeding her baby; People eating, drinking and enjoying to monuments like Taj Mahal, are listed on the record. Some images even display the breaking of the communication barrier between animals and humans. Jane Goodall is one of the recognized human on the list as well.
Music on the Golden Vinyl Record
Music represents love, hatred, peace, aggression, passion and most prominently it displays a Culture. Earth is filled with various cultures and beliefs up till its brim. Cultures form groups and those groups deliver quality to the world. Furthermore, the record possess one of the most divine pieces of art ever created. Humans have a brain which adapts and combines vibrations and harmony together to form music. Likewise, we expect that the other species might be compatible to understand music, as we do. Sociologists at the Cornell University, selectively picked up great music from each nation and finally placed it within the records. For example “Jaat kahan ho” an Indian Raag and Beethoven music is also included in the record. The famous pieces of music included are-
- Beethoven, String Quartet No. 13 in B flat, Opus 130, Cavatina, performed by Budapest String Quartet. 6:37

- Zaire, Pygmy girls’ initiation song, recorded by Colin Turnbull. 0:56
- New Guinea, men’s house song, recorded by Robert MacLennan. 1:20
Sounds & Greetings on the Golden Vinyl Record
Pleasant sounds of the nature; baby’s first cry; sounds of the waves; Manhattan’s rush hour and Saturn V’s monstrous blast are even included. Dominant natural sounds are-
- Mother and Child
- Hyena’s and dogs
There are more than 6500 languages in the world. Sometimes its even hard to imagine the depth of knowledge every citizen of earth owns. Language plays a crucial role in the advancement of any civilization. Transfer of knowledge and information led to the development of the countries and the world, with the bridge of language. The Golden record contains greeting to the aliens in 55 different languages. Economic and Geographic diversity was kept in mind and formulated within the golden vinyl.
We don’t really know the time and date till our existence is set. Memories are present, once a person dies, his existence passes away and so his memories from our mind. Then what will happen when the Earth passes away? Information clashes with the ravages of time, and time is limited. The mere existence of humans is limited on our planet. Who will notify the foreigners (Aliens) that we ever lived? What will be the proof of our existence?
This article’s agenda is not to endorse NASA or any other space research organization, but is to understand the contribution and Importance of the Golden records.
The precious records are flying down the cosmos, hoping that one day someone will find them and they will look how adorable our Blue marble was.
